The ASME B16.48 standard that determines the dimensions of a spectacle blinds is ASME B16.48. In addition to the Pipe Flanges Spacer Ring Dimensions, this standard also envelopes parameters such as pressure-temperature ratings, materials, marking, tolerances, as well as testing for operating line blanks. The ASME B16.48 Spectacle Blind Flange is available across different markets in sizes NPS 1/2 through NPS 24, whereas the pressure class rating of ASME B16.48 is as follows i.e. 150, 300, 600, 900, 1500, and 2500.

A Stainless Steel Spectacle Blind Flange is a safety device that can be used to isolate a section of line or piece of equipment. Similar to any flanges a spectacle blind flange is used when the line or equipment in a piping system needs to either be inspected, modified or removed from service. Both the Spacer & Blind ASME B16 48 are different than a valve since the blind is a permanent or long term isolation device.

A Carbon Steel Spectacle Blind Flange is machined from a single piece of metal, which has been cut to match the pipe size as well as is to be fit between two pipe flange. This type of flange would require an additional gasket when it is installed. Also, the bolts used in to fasten these flanges will need to be lengthened depending on what piping class and size blind is used. The thickness of the EN 1092-2 Spectacle Flange Pressure Ratinge is specified based on the line pressure and pipe size.

Slip On Flanges have a lower initial cost than Stainless Steel 316L Slip On Flanges because they require less accuracy in cutting pipe to length, and they provide a greater ease of alignment in assembly. However, their calculated strength under internal pressure is approximately 2/3's the strength of Stainless Steel 316L Slip On Flanges, and their life under fatigue is 1/3 shorter. Slip-on Flanges are limited to 1/2" to 2½" sizes in 1500lbs standard.
